Why we set this up

We started Recilens because we kept meeting companies who had paid for software twice: once for something that did not work, and again to replace it.

What kept going wrong

The pattern was consistent. A supplier quoted a fixed price against a thin specification, disappeared for four months, and delivered something that matched the document but not the business. Nobody had lied. The process simply had no point at which the client could see the work and correct it.

Brief, shape, build, live — with a date against each one.

What we decided to do differently

One decision follows from that, and everything else in how we work is downstream of it: there is running software on staging every two weeks, from the second week. It makes being wrong cheap, and every project is wrong about something.

  • Working software every fortnight, so a wrong turn costs two weeks
  • Decisions written down the same day, because memory diverges
  • Everything in the client's accounts from day one, so leaving is easy
  • The engineer on the call, not someone relaying what the engineer said

The trade-offs we accepted

This way of working is not free. It means we are slower to quote, because we will not price a thin brief. It means more of the client's time, a few hours a fortnight. And it means we turn down work we would be wrong for, which is harder than it sounds when the invoice would be welcome.

What we are still working on

Our own marketing, mostly. This site carried claims we could not substantiate and numbers that contradicted each other across pages, which is exactly the sort of thing we would flag in a client's product. Removing them was overdue.

Questions we get asked

Because the ones that used to be here were not reliable. Three different pages on this site claimed three different client counts, and one claimed a success rate that was obviously a data entry error. Rather than replace them with figures you would have no way to check, we took them out and described the work instead.

Work outside what we build well, a client who cannot free up a decision-maker, or a fixed deadline that is already impossible when we are asked. The last one is the most common. Taking it on anyway helps nobody, and we would rather lose the work than deliver something late and blamed on us.
